If you know Maui or have read about the island, the term "Up Country" is familiar. This area of the island doesn't have tourism as its primary focus. Nor, in our case, does it have to be "up." Maui is known as an island microcosm; Kihei is a desert, Haleakala a 10,000-foot mountain crater, and the east side of the island was all rainforest before deforestation. Our particular "Up Country" area is tropical.
We're located on the ocean side of the Hana Highway, seven miles beyond Paia. Haiku has, in the past ten years, expanded from a small rural village serving a very local population to an area that includes individuals wanting to build large homes on acreage in lush tropical surroundings. Who would have predicted a gourmet deli in Haiku Town? Haiku is just 13 miles from the Kahalui Airport. On the way to the house, you'll pass Hookipa each world renowned for its windsurfing competitions and Mama s Fish House, rated the number one fish restaurant by US News and World Report. |
